Story :: essays research papers
Terrorist actions, what exactly are they? Well just imagine yourself in a place where bombs can turn up in the strangest of places like inside a watermelon on the seat of a bus or inside a drink bottle being hurled at a pub. Malls getting bombed everyday and having to keep your child inside at all times because it seems to be the safest places, but it can still be bombed as well. This may not be an everyday thing in the United States but lately they happen to the people of Israel and Palestine almost every day. Lets us travel back to September last year with what started out as a disagreement regarding land became violent. The countries' leaders, Ariel Sharon of Israel and Yasser Arafat of Palestine, have made attempts at armistice, but both sides were unable to agree on anything. My essay is going to cover three major points: one, where the United States stands in this war that is being waged. Two, how this whole thing started and why, and finally how I believe this dispute is goin g to end. First and foremost, I am going to speak about where the United States stands amidst all this. Both the United States and the European Union believe that they share a common vision of the two states, Palestine and Israel, living side by side in peace and security. President Bush spoke at a White House news conference with European Union (EU) Council President Jose Aznar and EU Commission President Romano Prodi, after three and a half hours of talks with them. The talks were part of the annual summit between the United States and the European Union. President Bush also said that the United States wants to work with the Palestinian people "to build a Palestinian state that both lives at peace with Israel and lives up to the best hopes of its people." He said it was important for Arafat to show the world "that he's capable of leading" his people toward peace and away from violence. Secondly, how did this all start? Well, on one side (Israel) of the issue we have those who believe that God has given Palestine to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, a gift made in perpetuity. For believing Jews and Christians, Israel's original occupation of Palestine was commanded by God, as was the destruction of the original population.

Macbeth â⬠Kingship Essay
The role of the king in Medieval society was blessed by God and enjoyed almost divine status. The King embodied the moral and social welfare of his subjects and, with this in mind, the theme of Kingship can easily be understood. In the play kingship is so significant a theme that Shakespeare presents four versions of it. Firstly, there is the begin, almost ideal kingship of Duncan, whose murder constitutes the perversion of this ideal. This is followed by the tyrannical reign of the usurper Macbeth. King Edward, though an indirect character, he represents the opposite to Macbethââ¬â¢s reign of terror, Edwardââ¬â¢s represents the capacity for absolute goodness. Finally, speculation remains as to Malcolmââ¬â¢s potential as future King of Scotland. Although a work in process he is the ââ¬Ësovereign flowerââ¬â¢ and Macbeth is seen as the weed. ââ¬Å"Gracious Duncanâ⬠is the first example of a benign and worthy King. From his introduction in Act 1 Scene 2 to his untimely death in Act 2 Scene 2, Duncan appears to have been the ideal King, who exemplified the ââ¬Å"King becoming gracesâ⬠. He is admired by his subjects for his justice, gratitude, generosity and compassion. He is generous in his praise of those whom he feels have served him well, in particular Macbeth, ââ¬Å"O worthiest cousin/ More is thy due than more all can pay. â⬠However, he is not entirely without fault, his weakness is displayed in his overly-trusting nature that leads to his death. The trust he places in others is noble in a King. Duncanââ¬â¢s murder, therefore, is unnatural, a crime against the course of nature. Yet nevertheless does this stop Macbeth, and he commits regicide and succeeds to the throne as a usurper but no sooner has he killed Duncan does he wish him alive again showing his inner turmoil and guilt as a reluctant criminal ââ¬Ëwake Duncan with thy knocking, i would thou couldstââ¬â¢. Macbethââ¬â¢s unlawful accession to the thrown upsets the natural order ââ¬Ëby the clock ââ¬Ëtis day, and yet dark night strangles the travelling lampââ¬â¢ . Macbeth acquires power illegally and abuses it when he has it, to the detriment of his country, killing all those who oppose his rule and speak of fear ââ¬Ë send out more horses, skirr the country round, hang those that talk of fearââ¬â¢ . however, he is unhappy in his ââ¬Å"great office. â⬠The achievement of power has not brought him contentment, ââ¬Å"To be thus is nothing but to be safely thus. â⬠His reign, for which he ââ¬Å"playââ¬â¢d most foullyâ⬠is marked by tyranny, corruption and death, as Scotland ââ¬Å"sinksâ⬠. Lennox speaks of the suffering Scotland under Macbeths ower ââ¬Ë that a swift blessing may soon return to this our suffering country, under a hand accursedââ¬â¢ . Macbeth is only able to maintain his power only by resorting to murder and terror against his subjects, the murder of Macduffââ¬â¢s family in Act 4 Scene 2 is an astonishing crime caused by his own fears over his place as king. Under his reign, Scotland, ââ¬Å"sinks beneath the yoke/It weeps, it bleeds and each new day/A new gash is added to her wounds. â⬠Edward, King of England, provides a welcome alternative to the cruelty of Macbeth. There is a pointed contrast between Edward and Macbeth. Macbeth used his power for destruction and ruination. However Edward, like Duncan, was chosen by God. He is a true and rightful King and is seen as a saintly force with miraculous cures. ââ¬Ëspeak him full of graceââ¬â¢. He is a fitting opponent to the cruelty of Macbeth. The absolute goodness of King Edward highlights the opposing forces of good and evil in the play. The final image of kingship in the play revolves around Malcolm. His function in the play is highly significant as it is his duty to restore the status quo. As the rightful heir to the throne, the son of a good King and a holy mother, his smooth accession to the throne secures his acceptance by his subjects. Not only does this entitle him to the kingship, but it also promises a beinign reign. However, Malcolm is young and ineffectual and seems a slight figure to dispel the dark cloud of Macbethââ¬â¢s reign, His hasty departure following the murder of his father was a healthy decision for the survival of his line. Shakespeare allows for Malcolmââ¬â¢s maturing and he quickly grows into his role realising earlier mistakes he has made ââ¬ËUnspeak mine own detraction here abjure the taints and blames i laid upon myself, for strangers to my natureââ¬â¢. His caution which he has learned from his fathers mistakes are commendable and desirable in a future king and he displays none of the naivete of his father. He subjects Macduff to an elaborate tests to assure his loyalty to Scotland and he recalls the king-becoming graces, ââ¬Å"Justice, loyalty, temperance, stableness, bounty, perseverance, mercy, lowliness, devotion, patience, courage, fortitude. â⬠His succession to the throne is significant in restoring the natural order, and it is evident that he will use his power for purposes of good. The future of Scotland looks bright under the new King, . The theme of kingship in the play Macbeth is indeed a crucial one. There seems to be more to attaining power than merely sitting on the throne. One must be a King and inherit rightfully by succession, and thereby prosper with the grace of God. Malcolm, like Edward and Duncan, is the rightful heir to the throne. With the death of Macbeth, and Malcom as the rightful heir , the universal order is finally restored and Scotland will thrive again. Under Macbeth, Scotland suffered and it is clear then that a countryââ¬â¢s suffering or prosperity is a direct reflection of the moral nature of its King.

The Outsiders Debate Essay - 1124 Words
In the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, the Socs are the ones to blame for all of the problems. After all they are the cause of the rumble. The Socs are no good drunk 24/7 idiots who need to turn their ego down, and intelligence up. They screw up MANY times in the book. Yah yah, greasers are not perfect, but at least they have some common sense. And Iââ¬â¢ll tell you why the greasers are innocent and the Socs are not. First of all, Johnny was justified in killing Bob. It was in self-defense, the Socs beat up Johnny before traumatizing him, and the only reason why Johnny had his switchblade was because of the same Socs who tried to kill Ponyboy. ââ¬Å"The Socs caught my arm and twisted it behind my back, and shoved my face into theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Do you think that the Socs are the reason that Johnny is dead? Yes. Third of all, the Socs were the reason Johnny is dead. Because they drove Johnny and Ponyboy away, by forcing Johnny to kill Bob. ââ¬Å"Five Socs were coming straight at us, and from the way they were staggering I figured they were reeling pickled. That scared me. A cool deadly bluff could some times shake them off, but not when they outnumber you 5 to 2 and were drunk. Johnnyââ¬â¢s hand went in his back pocket and I remembered his switchblade.â⬠(Pg 62// The Outsiders/ Hinton). This quote shows that if the Socs did not outnumber Johnny and Ponyboy, or even not go to the greaserââ¬â¢s territory, then Johnny never would have stabbed Bob. They never would have gone to Windrixeville. They never would have saved those children, therefore Johnny never dying. Do you think that the Socs are the reason for the rumble? Yes. Fourth, the Socs were responsible for the rumble. The greasers were tired of the Socs fighting for no reason. The greasers just wanted to put an end to the trouble, once and for all. ââ¬Å" Darry turned to see who it was and Paul swung hard right to his jaw.â⬠(Pg 143/ The Outsiders/ Hinton). This quote shows that the Socs swung first therefore they started the rumble, not he greasers. ââ¬Å" ââ¬ËWe gotta win that fight tonight,ââ¬â¢ Dally said. His voice was hard. ââ¬Ë We gotta get even with the Socs. For Johnny.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Pg 107/ The Outsiders/ Hinton). Cyber Bullying Among Our Children - 1617 Words
Kids and young teenagers like to use their cell phones and go online to email, video chat, watch videos, instant message, play games, and do homework. But occastionally the way they talk to one another can get scary or mean. Because so much communication is done online, and over text message its really important for kids to acknowledge that their words can cause unintentional harm. Ones intentions, accompanying the state of their behavior, are important factors in deciding whether or not cyberbullying occurred. Occasionally being mean is accidental, but when kids use the Internet and cell phones to purposely upset someone else over and over, thats cyberbullying. Advice kids to establish affinity for others. Talk to your kids and explainâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Part of this stems from the newness of research in this area. Part of this also stems from the fact that perpetrators are often anonymous, and victims are often unwilling to come forward for fear that their parents will protect them by revoking their computer privileges. We do know, however, that cyber bullying occurs most frequently among middle school students, particularly those in seventh and eighth grades. Researchers have also found a link between cyber bullying and social anxiety. Both victims and perpetrators have higher levels of social anxiety than individuals not involved with cyber bullying. For victims of cyber bullying, heightened levels of social anxiety are not all that surprising when one considers that almost 50% of the individuals in one study did not know the identity of the person who cyber bullied them. The suffering experienced at the hands of bullies can l ead some victims to commit suicide, or as it is sometimes called, bullycide. In 2009, the National Center for Education Statistics reported that almost one in three students between the ages of 13 and 18 had been bullied in school. A survey by the Cyberbullying Research Center found that one in five students ages 10ââ¬â18 had been the victim of cyberbullying. Drama Coursework â⬠The Evaluative Phase Free Essays
1. My groupââ¬â¢s performance started in blackout with sad music which sets the mood and grabs the audiences attention making them listen and think. A red light comes up showing importance and there are narrators talking straight away all dressed in white to show purity and it looks a bit like they are angels. We will write a custom essay sample on Drama Coursework ââ¬â The Evaluative Phase or any similar topic only for you Order Now We also see the protagonist who is pregnant as she has a baby bump. In Scene 2 bay lifts come and take Maryââ¬â¢s things. There is a lot of confusion and action and the bay lifts are dressed all in black to show they are nasty and harsh. We see this when they grab things off the protagonist and throw her to the floor and everyone stares with their arms folded showing negativity and shows Mary is trapped. To show a change of scene there is a light change and the actors with there arms folded turn in to face off. Then there is another scene change shown by the music being raised and a new set being brought on. The actor who plays the bank manager wears a suit to show importance and seriousness and Maryââ¬â¢s husband wears a coat to show he has no intension if stopping with Mary and is going to go back outside. I think the next part of the performance is the strongest part of the play as the music is raised very loud and the actors mime an argument which is a contrast and then the protagonist looses the baby but as there is no speech you can interpret it any way you want. It is a very powerful and emotive scene. Then in the last scene a bed is made and the narrators look like nurses. They then give all the factual information about the advert and they all end in a still image on the bed and the lights fade which makes the audience think about what they have just seen and the music fades with it as the music is played all the way through. . In the beginning there is a lot of movement which grabs the audienceââ¬â¢s attention and there is also a slide and toys to signify a playground. You can tell that the actors are playing children as there voices are high and squeaky. There is a contrast when two of the actors are in a still image and the others are playing: silence verses sound. There i s a use of face off when the stage becomes clear and then the actor turns in to a narrator. There is then an argument given in gibberish so the audience can interpret it however they like and there is a prop used to show alcohol. Music comes in which is emotive and shows sadness and all the actors are in a family portrait. It starts out happy and ends up sad showing what it was like before the father started drinking and then after. Then the light changes to a blue spotlight to show a change of scene and it also symbolizes sadness and focuses on one person that gives a monologue. We can tell the actor is a child as she uses a high squeaky voice and has a dolly which seems to give her security and it makes you feel sorry for her. The scene changes and to show the dad is living on the streets he has a drab blanket and grubby clothes and the only possession he has is a box with newspaper in it. People walking by have changed there character and this is shown by change of costume which shows the performance has multiple role-play in it. At the end there is narration to tell the story and it ends with all the actors in a still image with the lights fading. 3. Before I started homelessness and runaways I used to feel scared of anyone I saw living on the street. I thought that because they are worse off than me and desperate they would try and mug me and if they asked for money I quickly walked away feeling nervous. I think I just judged them because they looked different and lived a very different life to what I did. Now I have learnt about homeless people I realise that they arenââ¬â¢t scary and are just the same as me. If I see someone homeless on the streets I feel sorry for them and I think this is because I didnââ¬â¢t really no why they were living on the streets. I think I just assumed they were all drug addicts but now I no there are lots of different reasons why people live on the streets and I have learnt that there are all types of homeless people. Now if I see someone I would give them some of my extra change if they needed it because I feel so lucky to live in a house and have a nice bed to sleep in and all they have our the clothes on my back. I think I would feel really happy if I had helped a homeless person out if even just a little bit. How to cite Drama Coursework ââ¬â The Evaluative Phase, Papers
